Why _IS_ this so expensive?

Yes. It was a low print run, and it sold very well. One of the few successes in supply/demand for Alpha Flight collectibles. You can't find it in stores, and it won't be re-printed. And the demand is high because it's the cream of the crop. I'd pick up Classics 2 and 3 now while they are still available.

I definitely plan on getting 2 and 3. I can find those cheaper than cover price. But that first one...
