Thread: Disney purchases Lucasfilm

    Default Disney purchases Lucasfilm

I'm sure most of you have already heard, but it was announced today that Disney has purchased Lucasfilm for approximately $4.5 billion dollars, and announced that Star Wars Episode VII will be released in 2015, with VIII and IX to be released every two to three years after, with more movies to come after that.

Can't forget to point out that included in the deal is the acquisition to Industrial Light and Magic as well as the rights to Indiana Jones.

Also kind of interesting that Star Wars is now under the same umbrella as Marvel, who did the comics for 10 years before Dark Horse began its publishing deal with Lucasfilm. We'll have to see if Dark Horse will continue to publish Star Wars comics beyond the near future, or whether or not Marvel will once again handle the reins.

Thanx Jason. I had heard something about Disney purchasing the Star Wars franchise, but was not aware they already have release dates for future movies announced. That is actually fairly exciting!

Monopoly law needs to be re-written so that corporations can't buy out healthy businesses, only businesses in bankrupsy, and can only acount for %5 of the market, tops. **** is getting rediculous, and quality only goes down as more and more products/projects fall under one all powerful group of decission makers. Look at what EA does to the game industry, fotr examply. DA 2 was directly the fault of corporate medling. It can't be good for creativity and quality in any creative industry, and it sure drives up prices in all sectors as well.

This has been the first time I've hoped a beloved franchise gets taken away from its original creator.

While I see the problem with a monopoly,
    1) Disney haven't really done anything to Marvel.
    2) Lucas hasn't been doing that much good for Star Wars lately.

So, at the moment, I'm cautiously optimistic. This could actually be good.
(And, if not, I'll just add SW7 to my list of movies that 'never existed'.)

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up."

And it was Lucas' last act to completely turn him into that which he was firmly against in his youth and led to his original creation of Lucasfilm.

The People vs. George Lucas is a great documentary about this very subject.

If they don't exist, then how can there be a list of them?

I was pretty certain that Episode 7 was originally supposed to be about the rise (re-rise?) of the Empire, and focuses on Han and Leia's twin Jedi children. If so, I doubt you will see many of the original 1977 cast appear as major characters. Maybe bit parts, sure.

Mark Hamil is big into voice acting, for instance his biggest claim to fame is he does the voice of Joker (from the 90's Batman Tv show, the Batman games and where they need a Joker voice-over).

Yes, the show I saw him in was a cartoon. Scooby Doo: Mystery Inc., to be exact.

He also voiced the Trickster in the Justice League cartoon, and even portrayed him in live action during the 90's Flash TV. Hamill loves his superhero/villians.

Thank you! I was TRYING to remember that villain without having to go through the DVD. Trickster in the Flash series in particular was MAGICAL, a stroke of genius.

btw, here is a great news story on George Lucas.
