Thread: Does Marvel hate Marriage and happy endings?

Thumbs down Does Marvel hate Marriage and happy endings?

    Query?

    Does Marvel hate Marriage?

    For the prosecution:

    Peter and Mary Jane-kaput
    Scott and Jean-kaput
    Johnny and Lyja-kaput
    Ben and Alicia-kaput
    Stephen Strange and Clea-kaput
    Heather and Mac Hudson-(?kaput)
    Liz and Harry Osborn-kaput
    Vision and Wanda Maximoff-kaput
    Pietro and Crystal-kaput
Brian Braddock and Meggan (? kaput?)

AND IT GOES ON. I am in a civil partnership and with my partner for 17 years, and I sometimes wonder do Marvel not get that relationships do survive!

    *Sheesh*

Unfortunately steady relationships don't provide the excitement. 'Because you demanded it, Reed and Sue celebrate their silver wedding anniversary' or 'The most shocking story of the year, Reed and Sue break bridges that may never be mended', what's going to make for the most interesting story? Comics are Soap Opera's with a few super battles thrown in. I'm all for stories that portray steady non complicated relationships, but unless done properly, they can be boring. I don't think Marvel hate steady relationships, just that steady means uninteresting.

Driftwood: Well, I got about a foot and a half. Now, it says, uh, "The party of the second part shall be known in this contract as the party of the second part."
Fiorello: Well, I don't know about that...
    Driftwood: Now what's the matter?
Fiorello: I no like-a the second party, either.
Driftwood: Well, you should've come to the first party. We didn't get home 'til around four in the morning... I was blind for three days!

Unfulfilled relationships are the best way to keep people watching (on TV) and, I assume, reading for comics. How many years did I want Ridge and Brooke to be together.. but yet, the writers would throw him in the arms of Taylor! When R&B finally got together after YEARS of being on TV, I stopped watching I hear they are divorced again, but they lost me... so true love should really never end up happening, or if it does, it should be one hell of a bumpy uncertain ride

Although I know comics are fiction, I would still like to see some semblance of real life in them. Depending on the story line, some breakups need to happen... Vision and the Scarlet Witch come to mind.
But the relationships that I want to stay intact in comics are the ones wher children are involved. Reed and Sue Richards have had some amazing storylines, some that stretched their marraige to the breaking point. But in the end, they have stayed together and raised children as a family. After everything that Mac and Heather have been through, they deserve a happy life, protecting both Canada and Claire.
I still hold out "hope" that Scott Summers and Jean Grey will find a way back to each other.

P.S. - This is speaking as a man who is married with children... 23 years and still going.

I think that Reed and Sue are the example of surviving despite the odds. I always hoped Scott and Jean would likewise make it.

I should have added Janet Van Dyne and Hank Pym to the list, but I have to admit, their entire marriage break up back in the days of Avengers volume 1, was gripping stuff!!

    Does Marvel hate marriage?
There was a rumour around that a (specific) higher up in the company does. Apparently, he's said as much...
    But this is just heresay.

Let's stay well clear of anything slanderous for legal reasons.

I believe his point was that the specific (fictional) character of Peter Parker being married negated the classic-style stories of Spider-Man being torn between his secret life and his personal one and trying to juggle the aspects of both whilst chasing Gwen, MJ, The Black Cat.
Having a wife that knows his identity stops a lot of that, and confuses new/returning readers fresh from the film.
