Default A First Look at Eaglesham's Alpha Flight Pt. 1

Here's the first look at Dale Eaglesham's take on Alpha Flight starting with Marrina! And it's not your daddy's Marrina. Very edgy.

Wasn't completely sold on 'hip and edgy' Marrina at first, but the sea turtle tats won me over.

Granted, of all the team Marrina is probably the one who could most do with a costume update, but I just don’t know that I’m a fan, especially of the seaweed collar + fins. We go from the too-simple bathing suit to something that really is entirely too busy. She looks like the Creeper and Mera had a love-baby and punted it to the Marvel U to keep everything hush-hush.

Some other comments re this here
    Del

Driftwood: Well, I got about a foot and a half. Now, it says, uh, "The party of the second part shall be known in this contract as the party of the second part."
Fiorello: Well, I don't know about that...
    Driftwood: Now what's the matter?
Fiorello: I no like-a the second party, either.
Driftwood: Well, you should've come to the first party. We didn't get home 'til around four in the morning... I was blind for three days!

On a more positive note, Marvel does seem to be giving the new Flight book an actual push -- good creative team, an event tie-in, lots of art sneak-peaks. It's heartening.

    The artwork is great.

For me, this is the definitive image of Marrina:

    She's been Byrned, of course.

Sweet, a little awkward, gentle... this one image captures it all.
Sure, she just goes a little mad sometimes. We all go a little mad sometimes. Haven't you?

But normally she's sweet and gentle.
Which means, to me, Marrina is the last person who should have the emo / punk look. It looks cool, I like it, but I don't think it suits her.

I'll have to wait and see where they're going with it.

Sea turtles. Hee hee. I think they work for her.

Being killed twice might do that to you...

It just might, especially after she's gone mad and gutted her teammates. And both times, she was killed by her husband.
I hope they spend some time discussing it in the comic, though.

This is what I'm thinking the redesign has to do with. Not even just the really dark stuff she's been through, but the fact that she was a sweet, small-town girl thrown headlong into the insane Marvel universe. She's due for a bit of rebellion, I figure.

I was going to say, "huh?"...But it makes sense in some regards. She is very young and having been killed twice and being brought back to life might mess one up a bit (tattoos, piercings and all).

Plus these aren't the finished item, just early design sketches.
Let's see how the final product and character writing work.

One of them did get called the final product. "This is the one." being the exact words.

Yeah, but from static first sketch to fully inked & coloured sequential can be a massive leap. The character can evolve over a few drawings.
