    Dana,

After all the crappy things that have happened to AF characters...perhaps we are better off that he doesn't want to mess around with them and try to explain their backstories, etcetera? Just a thought...

Oh no, FP...I'm not saying I want Claremont to take on Alpha...I'm just using him as an example of a writer from years ago, who did very good work in showing that heroes (in the X-men, etc....) had lives outside of fighting and gave them personalities. I feel John Byrne did the same with Alpha and is still very good, But both creators are practically crapped on by many so-called comic "fans" now, unfortunately.

I was just commenting on how many writers today focus on shock, endless battles and ridiculous controversy...Forgetting characterization and making the heroes seem human or even sane for that matter.

I had high hopes for Fraction, Carey, etc...Using Northstar (with the occasional Aurora guest-shot) and Jeffries in the X-Books, but seeing how they've been used (what little use they've had)...It's mostly been disappointing (to me, anyway).

Yeah, I think a lot of that right now just comes down to the fact that the X-Books are a total mess right now. It's just this massive cluster-**** of characters all crammed in one place, both A-listers and random minor mutants all thrown together to the point where you can't just ignore most of them since they're all important to this world they've crafted, but only a very small handful of them have time to get any meaningful characterization. They need to sort this mess up, have the X-Men form actual teams again instead of random dogpiles of characters running around and THEN keep our fingers crossed that AF can get some representation. Until then, we've got to live with a lot of glorified cameos and take solace in the fact that that's all ANY of these characters are getting.

On a related note, Madison's in this week's X-Men vs. Agents of Atlas, getting knocked out and briefly impersonated. I just like that Pixie called him 'MadJeff'. XD

You hit the nail on the head here. That's exactly the state of the X-Men right now and also exactly the the state of Alpha Flight. You summarized it perfectly. Although the image of a mutant dogpile made me smirk a bit!

Yeah, nice catch there. I like that, too, and that little exchange between Pixie and Cyclops turned out to be quite important...
    Spoiler:

    space for rent

Pixie goes back to the old X-Men headquarters to check on Mister Jeffries, who is working on something while the rest of the X-Men are over on Utopia island. She offers him a cup of joe , he refuses and when she returns to Utopia, she casually mentions this to Cyclops. Cyclops ticks up, sensing something is wrong and sure enough, X-Men come in BLAZING a few panels later. Wow, who knew Mister Jeffries liked coffee so much?

What do you do if your criminal gang has outgrown their territory? If you’re The Hood you set your sights on taking over a whole country! But the mineral-rich South American nation of Santo Rico already has rulers—the X-foes known as Madison Jeffries and his insane, flesh-twisting brother Lionel--who don't intend to give it up without a fight! Oh, and we finally learn how Magneto feels about all this...
Really good issue actually, of course it should be no suprize the brothers go down but man they go down fighting.

(Credit where it's due dept: I was quoting Terry Pratchett there.)

Dana, I just wanted to take a moment to mention that I fully agree with all you've been saying about the need for characterisation. (Well, maybe not the American spelling of 'characterization', but y'know).

While (imho) Claremont's lost that ability lately, at the height of his talent he and Byrne were both very good at giving us heroes who were people we could care about -- and that's something comics seem to be lacking these days.

I already quoted this in another post, but it was brought up at the Baltimore Comic Con:

"Fraction was asked if "Uncanny X-Men" would feature a core X-Men team now that Utopia has been established. "There's an entire line of books, so the cast will be diverse," he said. "It's going to stay very much an ensemble book. Obviously there's a core inner circle. We'll actually see the deployment of a six-man 'San Francisco' squad, so we'll see how everybody gets arranged."
I hope Northstar is one of the men on the six-man San Francisco squad. Let's see, I bet it will be:
    Cyclops
    Emma Frost
    Wolverine
    Namor
    Northstar
    Angel

although you could swap out Northstar for Colossus or Nightcrawler just like that. Namor might boot right after Dark Reign ends, who knows?

Assume the Science Team is left alone... which would be nice because then Jeffries could pop up in any X-book, like he did in the New Mutants, in the Agents of Atlas, Legacy Annual, wherever they need some science thingy, he's there, nice!

    Where would that leave
    Rogue (staying w/Legacy?)
    Gambit (staying w/Legacy?)
    Colossus
    X-23
    Pixie
    Prof X (serving as advisor)
Beast (rumored to be leaving anyway)
    Iceman
    Nightcrawler
    Domino
    Cuckoos
plus a bunch of other younger mutants too numerous to list

See the full report of the Panel atCBR.

Ah, yes Jeffries is sticking around for a while. You can see him in the preview art for Uncanny X-Men #518 here talking to Magneto, I think that's Magneto? And again sitting on the bed.
