Thread: Alpha Flight on DVD

    Default Alpha Flight on DVD

Recently I purchased the DVD "X-Men Volume 2", the second season of the hit 90's X-Men cartoon show.

The second episode (listed as episode eighteen) is entitled "Repo Man", and is an 'interesting' retelling of the first appearance of Alpha Flight.

All in all, the characters are handled well, if not exactly true to form. The plot...well, they made some changes, they really did their best to make Vindicator into somebody that seemed to be bordering, at times, on being evil, while Heather was the rational and caring one.

It may not have been perfect, but it was Alpha Flight, and I enjoyed it. I am willing to bet that, even though there were a lot of changes, it was still likely MUCH closer to reality than the Wolverine Origins movie is.

If any of you get a chance to pick this up and view it, take that chance - you won't be too disappointed.

If i think of it, i will watch this again, on my PC, and try to capture some screen images...

Thanks for your post. "Repo Man" is my favorite episode of the "X-Men" Tv series, and everything you say about it here is true.

I can remember when it was first on the air. I'd anticipated it for weeks, having seen a description of it mentioned in an article about upcoming episodes of "X-Men" in the Comics Buyers Guide. Then, when the day came, I was so excited to see our favorite heroes that I didn't mind that the episode wasn't entirely plausible, and I was in a warm glow for days. Also, I taped it, and I still cherish the tape, and watch it on special occasions. It may not be entirely perfect, but it's a good rendition of Alpha Flight in many ways.

Incidentally, although it's no doubt been mentioned before, Alpha Flight almost got its own series back in 1984. There was an ad in Variety for "co-production opportunities". I guess they couldn't get the funding for it. (Why couldn't I have been a millionaire? )

I grew up in the 80's. I had a friend as a teenager, he was a year older than me, and he was a comic-book collector. It was he who turned me on to comic books. X-Men was one of my favourites at that time, seeing them fight the Brood and the Dark Phoenix saga, these turned me on to the X-Men. Also, he collected Alpha Flight, and i loved those so much that starting with issue 29, i became a collector myself of Alpha Flight for a while (until in the 40s, when they turned to absolute crap).

In spite of my love for the X-Men (and Alpha Flight), as a young adult i stopped collecting comics. This animated series was on in the 90s, when i was a young adult, struggling to get by financially, and without a tv, so i probably only saw 4 or 5 episodes of this series.

When i saw the DVDs for sale on the internet, i decided to indulge in the past and pick them up. However, i could only afford one at the time, so i decided on volume 2, purely because it featured the Dark Phoenix saga.

The fact that Alpha Flight would make an appearance, was fully unknown to me until i popped the DVD into the player.

Seeing as how my love of all things Flight has been rekindled for the last two years or so (if anybody have a copy of Volume 1 Issue 130 to sell me, so i can complete my Vol 1 collection, then let me know!), i could not be happier to see Alpha Flight on the little screen.

Mind you, could they possibly have made the voices any more annoying - no, i did not think so!

Episode 27, "Out Of The Past, Part 1", also features Wolverine pre-adamantium skeleton.
In this episode, he is working as an operative for the Canadian government, when he is ambushed and then taken to the facility where he is experimented on against his will and bonded with the adamantium. The footage used is basically the same as the "Repo Man" episode, except this time when he escapes it fades out instead of showing Heather and Mac finding and helping him and then asking him to join Flight.

Puck's voice is horrible in this, but the rest aren't bad.

Alpha also appear in the episode 'Child of Light' (non-speaking cameo), and Northstar and Aurora in 'Slave Island'. (I believe Northstar has, like, one line.)

Yeah...somehow I expected Puck to sound "less like a dwarf" than he does. Ironic?

    WOOT!

I got the DVD yesterday! Finally! (The one with Slave Island, I already had the others.) First, it wasn't available, then no longer, now it's mine! Yes, mine! Mwahahaha!

Now to get my hands on Sas' Hulk appearance, which I haven't even seen.

I've got the original run of Weapon X. Enjoyed it in that format, wouldn't get the trade.

    "Salve Island"?
