Thread: Wolverine Insight?

    Default Wolverine Insight?

Over at the JBF. His origins are so convoluted now, I'm not sure what's what anymore.

Driftwood: Well, I got about a foot and a half. Now, it says, uh, "The party of the second part shall be known in this contract as the party of the second part."
Fiorello: Well, I don't know about that...
    Driftwood: Now what's the matter?
Fiorello: I no like-a the second party, either.
Driftwood: Well, you should've come to the first party. We didn't get home 'til around four in the morning... I was blind for three days!

I completely agree with the one poster who said:

Hmmmm....time to hit the reset button at Marvel. It makes my head hurt too much at times all the baggage they add to characters.
I desperately want to see the Marvel U rebooted to clean up all the convoluted garbage. Not to mention give AF a fresh start.

Just goes to show, JB's version was the best. Not only of Alpha Flight, but of Wolverine too.

There are many things i like about Marvel - many great writers and artists, for instance. Some unbeleivably awesome characters. But, their propensity to "fix what isn't broken" really milks my goat, if you get what i say.

Legerd, are you familiar with the phrase "Be careful what you wish for"? How about "Ultimate Marvel"?

Sorry, do not have the data in front of me right now, but isn't one of Marvel's writers doing something similar with the X-Men right now? Basically, going back to a certain point in time, and re-telling their adventures, actually taking things in a different direction than what was previously done?

It is possible, then, that Alpha Flight could show up in that series. A new, freshly imagined Alpha Flight, one that holds closer to the ideals of what John Byrne set them up to be. Although they may never be Alpha Flight again in normal continuim, they could at least have some life within this series. And perhaps even launch again, through it?

Just a thought. Don't know if it is a good one, or not...

Yes, you ae talking about Claremont's X-Men book, called something like "GeneXt" or whatever, about what happens to the X-Men 15 yaers after he left the books in 1994 (again, or whatever) so the children of X-Men rule the team with a few older characters (Frost, Beast, ?)

No. If i remember correctly, it is not about the X-Men's kids, although i have heard of that concept as well.
He goes back to a certain point in time. he then takes the X-Men in the direction that he wished they had taken at that time, in other words telling possibly all-new tales of them as if they had made different choices from that time forward.
It is a bit like an alternate timeline X-men, based upon a split in the timeline at that point. I think.

Yeah, I considered that point, but do you think bringing the team back from the dead will make their backstory less convoluted than a reboot? I mean, that's the big argument against AF right? Characters like Mac are too hard to peg down due to their messy histories, that they are unusable as characters. No writer wants to have to deal with all that garbage. Well, at least that's what I read somewhere at sometime.
I'd vote for a reboot, because, yes they may get the bum steer as is usual, but then again, they might get treated better the next go 'round.

They really squandered a great universe-wide reset opportunity with secret invasion.

I concur...In my honest opinion, SI was a horrible waste of paper.

Nothing of any importance was accomplished by this "event", Marvel even had to do damage control by saying that it was only meant to be a build up to Dark Reign, that it was never meant to be any more than that. I don't believe that for one minute..It was terribly planned and executed.

One hero (Mockingbird) who wasn't even replaced by a Skrull was brought back from the dead, one major hero (Wasp) was killed (in a very lame way), a few incredibly minor heroes were offed (I think) and the skrulls posed so little a threat that a lone dinosaur could take them out. Lameness on monumental levels.

Granted, I always liked Mockingbird (back in my West Coast Avengers- reading days), but this was a crappy way to bring her back...Especially when there were more deserving, more recently-deceased heroes in need of resurrection...Need I say more?

As for Wolverine...I agree. His back story is now a big mess.

So now, both James MacDonald Hudson and "the Professor" that added the Adamantium to Wolvie's bones are related to him? Lame! His real name is James (just like Mac) also? Super Lame! I always hated the Japan angle in his history (thanks Claremont)...What the heck is with X-People and their becoming Ninjas/Samurai/Ronin/Jedi, etc...? Can't they just be mutants? ...And Why is he now indestructible?

Wolverine's past should have remained a mystery, as far as I'm concerned...He was a far better character, when he had vulnerabilities and was a mystery.

A character with faults and weaknesses, is much more real. I agree.
