Thread: mondo marvel: alpha news

Well, this sounds encouraging, i have to admit.

As we are all aware, there are a multitude of characters out there that could easily fit into a new Alpha Flight team, many of whom have been on an old Apha Flight team of course. As well, there are characters who have been written off who could be brought back fairly easily as well. Hell, bring 'em back off-panel, for all I care, just bring 'em back! lol

We shall have to keep tabs on this, question a few of the people at Marvel who know and love the Flight and who might be willing to talk with us, that sort of thing.

And, i agree. Flight is much more like the Four than anything else, a cross between them and the X-Men, except the X-Men were always about being mutants, whereas the AFers were always about being ...er ... okay, maybe they AREN'T like the X-Men, then...

Anways, we shall see. Personally, I would love for their biggest and baddest villain to be Mailman Mike, followed closely by Wild Child...

And, colour me stoopid, but I am all for Arachne staying on the team. She's grown on me a bit.

I can see keeping Arachne. After the Skrull War there will be no need for any Initiative nonsense (I know some like that comic, but I can't stand the Initiative or Order comics) so once Iron Skrull et al take over or get their butts kicked, the sanity that is Alpha Flight will easily fit into the new Marvelverse.

    Personally, i like Avengers:Initiative.

    But, i digress...
Hopefully there will still be a bunch of skrulls hanging out on earth that need to be found and dealt with after all this is over.
That'll segue nicely into a new Flight comic. What if the Canadian PM was a Skrull, or high level politicians, or military leaders, or heros and criminals? Wouldn't this country need some heroes? Preferably some they could trust, some actually from Canada?

I'm just as optimistic about this as I was for Vol. 2, Vol. 3, and Omega Flight.

All I'm saying is, I'm not going to get my hopes up...It's how I feel and it should not be a reflection on how others feel. Besides, we have almost nothing to go on besides JoeQ saying Marvel will "revisit" Alpha Flight and that they may be tinkering with the concept yet again (in an effort to make it different).

I understand your apprehension Dana. But this is how Im looking at Joe Q's statement of trying to give them a new concept. Many people here not all but quite a few really only hold John Byrne's run in high regard. There were parts of the rest of the series that had its moments but by and large It was Byrne's run that defined the Alphans for what they are and set the tone for the rest of their stories. Byrne's run was a new and different way to tell the story of a team book. With how it would focus on a few characters at a time. It really gave the reader a chance to bond with the characters. After that it really did seem to become just about "that Canadian super team". While there is nothing wrong with that as a concept alone and many of us enjoyed it as well. Sales wise it did not catch on with those outside of the loyal fan base. While we as fans just want a book back that will star our beloved heroes. JoeQ for right or wrong is going to try and make a book thats going to sell. If you count Omega Flight(even though it sold amazingly). This will be the 5th attempt at a series. For the new series to do well its going to need to bring in new fans. Of course the built in fan base will be there from the start. But for it to endure and do well its going to need something that makes it different from other books out there atm. Maybe that means returning the book to its original concept or something else entirely. Until we do know what that concept is I to will hold my breath. Ill try to remain optimistic as I know that the Fred Van Lentes of the world are out there and get what can make the book special. So try to keep your chin up. Some news is better than no news. And maybe...just maybe the 5th time will be the charm.

I think what Dana is saying (and please correct me if I'm wrong) is that he has no faith in Joe Q or anything he says. Remember he's the guy who promised an OF ongoing only to chop it to a mini, then said if enough interest was shown he would consider a series. Well, we know how that turned out.

Personally, I have no hope of getting an AF series (let alone a good one) from Marvel while Joe Q and his cronies run things.

Yeah I hear ya on that. I guess I'm an optimist by nature. I to have little to no faith in regards to JoeQ when it comes to Alpha. There are some things I like about Marvel atm and somethings that are beyond ponderous(see Spider-Man's recent storyline "Brand new day"). I think my optimism is wrapped around the fact that if JoeQ thinks it will make money he will do it. Omega sold very well and hes probably trying to find a way he thinks will make it work. If there is money to be made and It seems that he acknowledges this. It could very well happen.

    Default AF v4 in 2008?

Now I know Wikipedia is not the most reliable source, but I noticed this there today:

    "Volume 4
New ongoing series coming soon from Marvel Comics late 2008, to feature a more classic lineup of Byrne's characters"

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_Flight

Apart from Joe Q's statement, is there further info to back this up?

If it's to feature a more classic lineup of Byrne's characters, then all I can say is FOR THE WIN!

Sounds like and overzealous and very optimistic fan to me. It would be nice if it were true, but IWBWISI.

Interesting. Ill try and remain cautiously optimistic. I did like that it said "a more classic lineup". Secret Invasion ends in December. That to is at the end of the year. Maybe just maybe we will see this new "more classic lineup" come out of Secret Invasion somehow.
