Thread: Anti Spam Measures

  1. #1

    Default Anti Spam Measures

I've added a question to the registration form, if anyone wants to have a look. It's a pic of Guardian, asking the question of who he is. If the either of the answers: guardian, vindicator or James MacDonald hudson, are given it will procede with the registration. Hopefully this we keep my and our friendly mods from deleting piles of spam accounts every day.

I figgure this is a question that just about anyone looking to join this forum should know.

they could, but anyone who is doing this kinda thing does it quick and easy, if they have to dig and hunt and work to register they'll not bother and move on somewhere easier.

But isn't the answer in your first post, so they only have to read through and get the answer ?

Fiorello: Well, I don't know about that...
    Driftwood: Now what's the matter?
Fiorello: I no like-a the second party, either.
Driftwood: Well, you should've come to the first party. We didn't get home 'til around four in the morning... I was blind for three days!

I agree with Ben. This is probably enough of a Spamwall. Most spammers won't bother reading any of the forum before heading to register. Those few who are resourceful enough won't be hard to remove for the Mods.

I guess you're totally right. That prouve I'm not a spammer. I'm totally clueless as how they work.

Haha damn, if I were applying and saw that question, I'd have put "Mac". If that didn't work I'd prolly lose interest and go chase a butterfly as I don't have a high attention span. So that's just me.

Should be enough to keep out the spamers. Good thinking, Ben.

It stops spammers because they don't come on here and read forums (as mentioned). What they do is find a phpbb forum and click a script that auto populates the random name, random email, and fills out all those great URLs for viagra and late night calls to those #s that charge so much to hear a woman tell you what you want to hear.

I have a similar one on my forum. I just rotate the question like, "How many days in a year?" "How many months in a year" that kind of thing.

    Excellent idea!
Suggestion: Add 'Mac' and 'James Hudson' and 'Weapon Alpha' to the correct answer fields. (I don't know how easy that is, though, or even if it's possible.)

Or, to make things much easier on yourself:
Use a (Byrne!) pic of orange Sasquatch and have the answers 'Sasquatch' and 'Walter Langowski'.

Yeah, maybe you can use anti-spam for the guest book from the main page. It's overrun with spam. Or just take it off completely.

Seconded, but Ben is extremely busy this time of year. Now that he's aware of the problem.

As for the Spam, I blame the Vikings, 'KILL ALL VIKINGS'. Easy to spot, they have bits of cow on their heads.
