I've just checked the Wikipedia page: that Nova issue actually was their 616 debut. (It keeps saying #4, which was their first full issue, but #3 has a page at the end where you see the Chitauri...

That's a Chitauri creature. They've been in 616 continuity for a while, which, as you say, is a cool movie tie-in.
