Canadian health insurance

To all my fellow posters that live in Canada,

how does your insurance work in Canada. I heard there were some tweaks a few years ago and I wanted to know.
The basic premise of it?
ANy special quarks or percs about it?
How it works outside Canada?

Doesn't that depend on what doctor you end up with?

It works like this - I pay. The government owes. You're covered. Taxes go up. The end. That's really all I know about it! (it's almost as big a Canadian government secret as Department H is!)

It may be complex (ie transfer payments to provinces and such) but its not secret.

I'd rather pay $35.00 a month (not even sure if that is the proper amount - my employer covers it) than have to worry about big medical bills.

Secrecy lies within complexity. "Make it non-understandable, and they will come" (didn't Kevin Costner do a movie about that?).
